May Editors Letter

The entire area is abuzz with activity. The birds are singing, the bees are buzzing, the air is alive—Hurray it's MAY!

The smell of cut grass is in the salt air. The trees are in full bloom. The flowers are creating quite a show. Summer grills are firing, ice-cream trucks are playing their music and everyone is getting excited for the Summer. I love May. It's the essence of fertility and rebirth. May just makes me want to build a bonfire, dance in the moonlight and thank god for all the wonders of this earth.

As the temperature rises, I find myself longing to go for Beach Walks with my dog Nugget. As a husky/retriever/shepard mix he would go everyday—even in a blizzard. I on the other hand, prefer to walk the bays in the winter, and the ocean in the spring, summer and fall (Nugget thinks I'm a wuss). No matter what season you prefer at the coast, you will always be able to find Local Treasures. Decorating with rocks, shells and sea glass is one of my favorite pastimes. Being so close to the water, I couldn't help decorating my home with a nautical flair.

As May unfolds we begin to Think of Mom. Mother's Day is May 10th and we are always looking for ways to say thank you to our mothers. Not only for giving us life, but also for raising us to be the adults we are today. As a mother of a 5 and 4 year old, my gifts come in the craft variety (my favorite kind). Since I am older than ten, you can bet I'll be checking the product info page to see where to find a terrific gift locally for my mom.

A serious issue, that is the foundation of our ecosystem, is Healthy Waterways. It is a major concern in this area since our waterways shape every aspect of our habitat. Focusing on ways to reduce suburban runoff and treat our waterways with respect, is paramount. We want to enjoy our most beautiful natural resource for years and generations to come. Check to see if there is any more you can do to make our waterways pristine.

This month spend some time in Bellport. Our Merchant of Distinction is Donna Waters an elegant boutique right in the center of the village on Main Street. We also reviewed Porters on the Lane a steak and seafood restaurant located on Bellport Lane. Can we say YUM!

Don't forget to check out our real-estate section. Our event calendar and our service directory. We let you know what's going on and the best places to shop local, while thinking global. Let us know how we are doing on our blog.

Don't forget the Town of Brookhaven plant in is May 16th. Let's all do what we can to make Between The Ports greener. Hope to see you all outside!
